CSB Under 21 Neil Wright Shield Champions
Date of Event : Tue Jan 30, 2018 3:01PM

Cricket Southern Bayside won its first title when it defeated the West Gippsland Cricket Association in the final of the Under 21 Neil Wright Shield at Schramms Reserve Doncaster on Sunday 28th January.

Reduced to a T20 match commencing at 9am due to the forecast heat, Parkdale United’s Rahul Shanmugam (79) took no time to get going taking down the attack, whilst fortunate to survive being dropped twice, Shanmugam took full advantage of the short eastern boundary. Losing Mentone’s Michael Waller (2) early, South’s Elliot Bradley (73*) looked at ease with some excellent batting before being joined by Murrumbeena’s Will Kelly (50*) as the two took control racing CSB to 2/209.

After a first over blitz from the West Gippy Warriors, the bowlers settled into their stride, for West Gippy their opening bat Matt Welsh who looked a real threat in peppering the short boundary, dislocated his knee, and then the wickets began to fall consistently with the Warriors finishing at 9/117 in 17 overs. Bonbeach’s Tim Mulholland 1/30, Hampton’s Tom Marron 2/15 and Will Bowden 1/20, Beaumaris and CSB Captain Cam Watts 1/20, Michael Waller 0/17, McKinnon’s Dylan Thomas 0/10 and the 3 run-outs.

CSB congratulates all the players who participated in the matches throughout the series, with the team completing the task undefeated. For Bonbeach President Michael Hogan, it had been four years with the U21’s as team manager and scorer, Michael having put in a significant amount of time with the program and the win is a great reward. Michael was joined this year by Beaumaris captain Sam Coates as coach,  working with all the team to help improve them as cricketers, and working to bring them together as a team with practice sessions and additional games, his effort bringing reward with CSB’s first title.

For Tom Marron and Cam Watts, the program continues and we congratulate them both on being selected in the VMCU U21 representative side. The VMCU take on the VCCL at Bendigo on February 11.
